How Long Should He Wait to Propose?

I can remember waiting for what seemed like forever. I had been dating my boyfriend for about 2 years. I was 27.

Not exactly old, but I wasn’t getting younger and I wanted to move on with my life and start a family. I knew he was the one, and I was simply waiting for him to finally come out and pop the big question one day.

It had been two years and he still hadn’t proposed. It seemed like this was the time where it was supposed to happen, and I really had no idea when it would be. I didn’t want to waste my time.

I began to nag him about it (which I’ve learned you shouldn’t do), but it turns out that he had been planning on proposing within a matter of weeks anyway.

It was still a surprise nonetheless. We ended up getting engaged very shortly after this all, as he popped the big question while we were away for a weekend together. I was thrilled.

So you might be wondering when a man should propose to his girlfriend. In my case, it was just over two years but I have many friends who have gotten engaged after just a year. Some after even less time. What’s the appropriate amount of time though?

This will really vary by the relationship. There are so many things you must consider, like age, where the people are at in their lives, and what they want out of life. Sometimes jobs and money play a role in decisions too.

With that said, anyone in their late 20s definitely has a reason to ask their boyfriend about this if it’s been as long as it was for me. Even if it’s been close to a year, it’s something that’s definitely worth discussing to ensure that your goals in life are the same. Better to find out about issues before it’s too late, right? Good luck to you.

Skip ahead three years later. I’m now happily married with a child, and write about the little tikes kitchen and the little tikes cookin fun interactive kitchen.
